Pointe Variations

This class is taught by:

Eva Carius

Eva Carius started her ballet training the suburbs of Vancouver with Ellen Andrews and Jo Slater. From local competitions she won scholarships to the Banff School of Fine Arts and the School of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. She joined the RWB company in 1975. She danced in a broad range of rolls, from the classics of Les Sylphides (Waltz) and Ashton's Les Patineurs (Blue Girl) to the more modern and dramatic Family Scenes (The Mother) and Rite of Spring (Chosen One) by Oscar Araiz. In 1980 she was invited to Le Ballet du Grand Theatre de Geneve in Switzerland as a soloist, promoted to principal a year later. There she continued her work with Oscar Araiz reprising former roles and creating many new works.

Eva began teaching while in Europe, at summer school in Vignale, Italy. On returning to Canada she danced and taught company class for Judith Marcuse Repertory Dance Theatre. She also began teaching at The Dance Gallery, Terpsichore Studios, Goh Ballet Academy and Harbour Dance Centre in Vancouver. After taking a some years off to raise a family, Eva has been teaching at Harbour Dance Centre since 2006.

"Dance has brought a great deal of joy to my life, and I love to encourage students' natural joy of movement to flow through their ballet technique, fine-tuning that technique along the way."

Do you love to watch Ballerinas dance their variations (solos) on stage or YouTube? This is the class where you can learn how to dance them yourself!

We start with about 45 minutes of class/warm-up in pointe shoes, including barre and centre work, and then spend about 45 minutes working on the variation. You are always welcome to begin the class on pointe and change to soft shoes at any time during the class.

We usually spend 3-5 weeks on each variation. Occasionally we may work on a duo or trio, or larger corps de ballet repertoire. We may spend 6-8 weeks on larger works. If you really want to learn the dances, but are not comfortable on pointe, you are always welcome to take the class in soft shoes (ordinary ballet slippers).

Please be aware that this is not a beginner class. It fluctuates between Level 2 and Level 3.
