Ballet Intro

This class is taught by:

Nicola Earl

Nicola is a graduate of the teaching program at the Royal Ballet School in London, England. This was a three year full time training program which covered all aspects of dance training including classical ballet , pointe work, repertoire, RAD and Cecchetti syllabus, character, spanish, music, History of Dance and Benish Notation. It was at the end of this course that Nicola graduated top of her class and was awarded the 1998 Dame Ninette de Valois Award for excellence in teaching. She taught for nine years at the London Studio Centre which is a professional performing arts school where she held the position of Head of Year to all first and second year students. This involved working with each student in creating a timetable which met their individual needs and career choice. She also worked extensively with some of the leading dance physiotherapists and created rehabilitation programs to help nurse injured dancers back to health. It was here she had the pleasure of working with Margaret Barbieri, former Principal dancer with the Royal Ballet Company. Nicola assisted Ms Barbieri on her audition tours throughout Europe for her professional company Images of Dance.

Since arriving in Vancouver ten years ago, Nicola has worked at many schools throughout the lower mainland. She has been on the staff at Harbour Dance for the last ten years and is currently guest teaching for Ballet BC.

Nicola has recently enjoyed adjudicating for the Prince Albert Festival of Dance.

Danielle Clifford

Danielle toured throughout Europe as a principle dancer with the Grand Theatre de Nancy and as a soloist with the Nice Opera during the 50's and 60's. Shortly after immigrating to Canada in 1970, she opened the Ballet Studio in North Vancouver. Over the past ten years, Danielle has worked as ballet mistress at Anna Wyman Dance Company, completed the teacher training seminar at the National Ballet School of Canada and has adjudicated numerous competitions throughout the province. She was profiled in Vandance Magazine for her rich experiences. Danielle is co-founder of Harbour Dance.

Makaila Wallace

A Canadian born in Vallejo, California, Makaila started her professional dance training at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School at age 14 and attended Bolshoi Ballet summer programs. She danced with the RWB company as an apprentice before moving to Stockholm, Sweden to join the Royal Swedish Ballet. There she had the opportunity to perform many lead roles (including Myrtha in Giselle, staged and casted by Natalia Makarova). After three years, she returned to Canada and joined Ballet BC. Dancing nationally and internationally, her personal performance highlights have included works by choreographers Jorma Elo, Johan Inger, Crystal Pite, Aszure Barton, Serge Bennathan, Jiri Kylian and Medhi Walerski, among others. Makaila finished her final season with Ballet BC in 2014, where she danced for almost 11 years. She is now an independent artist living in Vancouver.
In the summer of 2015 Makaila was very honoured to be asked to be a part of the Margie Gillis Legacy Project (a platform to ensure Margie’s creative legacy continues) http://margiegillis.org/english/legacy-project-projet-heritage/ where she had the opportunity to observe and work closely with Margie and other collaborators in Montreal.
Makaila is dedicated to wanting to create a positive and supportive environment in her classes. There, she hopes people will have the opportunity to investigate and explore their own personal experiences and sensations of movement in an open and creative space. Photo by: Michael Slobodian

In addition to all of this exciting work, she has always remained very committed and enthusiastic about teaching dance at all levels and has branched out to training actors in New York as well. Emily is passionate about the pursuit of physical training in dance and has her Certified Personal Trainer designation from NASM in the US. One of her newest endeavors with colleagues in New York was the formation of PAC (Performing Arts Collective), which tours the North East area conducting performance workshops for pre-professionals.
